When it comes to changing your air filter, most of us think that changing it once every six months will suffice and that it won’t affect the indoor air quality of our homes. Others of us simply don’t think about it at all, and it takes our heating and cooling system breaking down, to make us realize that action is required of us. Knowing more about your air filter can help you to save money, as well as your health. A dirty filter means your HVAC system has to work harder, as well as causes the air in your home to be contaminated with allergens and other toxins. Here are some tips to help you keep your air filter clean.

Changing your air filter comes with some stipulations as to how often you should do it. Here are some factors to take into account.

  • What type of filter does your heating/ AC system require? Filters between one and three inches should be changed every other month, or every eight weeks.
  • Where do you live? Is the outdoor air quality good or bad? If you live in an area that is consistently congested with people and cars, it should be changed every four to six weeks.
  • Do you have any pets? If so, you may want to consider changing them every month. The excess hair can muck up the air filter much faster.
  • How many people live in your home? The more people that live in your home, the more often you should consider changing your air filter.

If you live in a single home, alone, you can generally stand to change your air filter every two months. However, if you have a pet or roommates, or live in a polluted area, you should consider changing it more frequently.
